Current studies of generosity come from many different and often disconnected disciplines and focus on various terms, such as philanthropy, volunteerism and altruism. The Science of Generosity initiative aims to bring together diverse approaches in order to create a field devoted to the study of generosity in all its forms.

To that end, it supports, conducts and shares scientific research on

  • the sources, origins and causes of generosity,
  • the manifestations and expressions of generosity, and
  • the consequences of generosity for both donors and recipients

Request for Proposals

The University of Notre Dame is now accepting letters of inquiry (LOI) for the second wave of the RFP competition at the Science of Generosity initiative. First wave funding recipients will be announced in late November 2009; at this time we are no longer accepting first wave proposals. LOIs with budgets of up to $150,000 for a project period of approximately 20 months are being accepted for review and full proposal consideration until December 1, 2009 at 5pm. Selection of LOIs for full proposal development will be made in February 2010.
